Hornet Connect VPN System : ( http://connect.spsu.edu )
The Hornet Connect VPN system provides secure access to key doIT services remotely via a web browser. Faculty and Staff now have access to the Network Connect service by default. This allows faculty and staff to have transparent access to network resources, and you can access the resoures as if your computer was present on campus. This allows for drag and drop functionality, newtork shortcuts, and local email client access. Here are the instructions for using the Network Connect service.
Some of the services you can reach include:
- Library research tools and databases, including Galileo
- Personal "Z:\ drive" file storage and "W:\ drive" web pages
- The doIT Software Depot of free software
- Banner resources
- doIT Helpdesk
- Other discipline/department specific resources
Logging in:
-
Open a web browser, and go to: http://connect.spsu.edu
-
Use your SPSU email prefix as your Username. (for example, if your email address is example@spsu.edu, your login Username would be example.
- Your Password should be the same as is used for your email account.
Mapping a network Drive from within the Network Connect service.
Once connected, you can access the servers you typically access on campus. Typically, you will map a network drive in order to gain drag and drop access to the servers and files you typically use on campus. You must use the Network Connect service in order to map SPSU network drives to your off-campus computer.
Compatibility with Browsers
The Hornet Connect VPN system is compatible with Windows XP (IE and FireFox), Mac OS X (FireFox and Safari) and can be made to work with Linux. The doIT can only provide support for Windows and Mac users at this time. Compatibility with Windows Vista is unknown at this time, but should be available shortly.
Java requirements
Note: the Hornet Connect VPN system requires that Java be installed on your system. Also, several security items are pushed from the system to your home workstation. The first time you connect to the VPN system, you will be prompted to install these packages if suitable versions do not already exist.
The installation process is fairly non-intrusive, but does require some time to download and install. The time involved is based on several factors including your Internet connection speed (DSL/Broadband only), your system speed, Internet congestion, etc.
If any portion of the installation fails or takes more than 10 minutes to complete, simply reconnect to the service and the installation will start over from where it left off.
If you have any problems installing or using the Hornet Connect VPN system, please contact the doIT Helpdesk at xHELP (678-915-4357).
